The Purpose and Constitution of Findon Sheep Fair
Purpose
Findon Sheep Fair is a fun and free weekend for the Community of Findon village and the surrounding areas. Local businesses are encouraged to support the fair by their sponsorship and by taking the opportunity to have stalls at the event.
In our long history dating back to 1261, the fair was an auction for sheep in West Sussex and neighbouring areas. Auctions no longer take place, but sheep judging competitions together with displays and shearing demonstrations have enabled us to ensure that sheep remain the primary focus of the fair.
There are four primary areas where the Findon Sheep Fair benefits our Society :-
Local business
If we can encourage various local businesses, we can make a positive difference to local skills and to the reduction of food miles.
Encourage shepherding skills
Without the development of new shepherds, there won’t be sheep to keep our beautiful South Downs looking like they do – and providing high quality local produce.
Community Cohesion
We all need to get on well with our neighbours and our neighbourhoods. Volunteering at FSF is one way of promoting this without colour, creed or political differences getting in the way.
Donations to local charities
In those years when a surplus has arisen because the income has comfortably exceeded the operating costs, FSF has been able to make significant donations to a variety of local charities.
